I'm often asked why I became a Podiatrist...so I thought I'd give a bit of an insight into why I chose a career that most people say "euurgghh!" about! 😂... so buckle up for an in depth explanation!

As with most things it wasn't one single event that led me to my career it was a few...

My previous background is Psychology. Working within the Prison service and Probation then victims of crime, I have always been in a role that involves "helping" people.

On the birth of my youngest daughter I decided I would like a change in direction and began to look at various medical careers, I contacted many professionals and universities about different roles such as Physiotherapist, Occupational Therapist and so on, but the day I was invited to The University of Salfords Podiatry clinic was a turning point.

There I saw the huge range and diversity of the work a Podiatrist (also known as Chiropodist) can do. From Musculoskeletal assessment, orthotics prescription and manufacture, management of the diabetic foot, nail surgery, prescribing medicines to the more well known areas of Podiatry, nail and skin care. My curiosity was piqued and I was ready for the challenge!

Once I had a place on the course I telephoned some already established Podiatrists to speak to them about their experiences of the job and for their tips or advice.

One thing that I will always remember is being told "This job is about people, getting to know them, talking through their issues and even becoming life long friends and advocates"

This sentiment drives my current practice. I don't just see a pair of feet. I see a person. My background in Psychology no doubt helps me. The importance of giving people the time and space that isn't often available in NHS patient/professional interactions due to funding and time constraints of that environment is paramount.

With this approach, together with my patient, we piece together the puzzle of solving or alleviating their ailment.

So there, in not so much of a nutshell, is my path to the job I love so much today. Every day is a challenge. Every person a unique case.

Kind regards

The Friendly Podiatrist.
